LHYA Youth Basketball Community Update

From: President [president@lhya-sports.org]

Subject: LHYA Youth Basketball Community Update

Parents, coaches and members of the community,   With the recent mandating of entry fees for youth basketball games at Watkins Middle School, it is with much regret that LHYA will not participate in games played at that facility for the remainder of this basketball season. Over the course of the holiday break, several attempts have been offered to suppress the fees, which have not been negotiated or accepted by the Watkins youth basketball program. Those options included all of the following:
  • Re-scheduling games located at Watkins facilities to other locations that do not force an entry fee.
  • Options of per-game “buy-out” to cover the facility fees and to prevent LHYA members from being forced to pay and keeping the schedules business as usual.
LHYA commends all the volunteers, parents and players trying to jump start the Watkins youth program for their district, however the current entry fee structure does not complement LHYA’s core value of keeping youth based sports free to attend.   As of January 7th, 2010, all LHYA games scheduled at Watkins facilities are cancelled. At this time LHYA, is working feverishly to reschedule games for all LHYA teams that are impacted. I ask that players and parents be patient and understanding during the rescheduling process. Be sure to regularly check your email inbox, league website and with your team coach for any re-scheduling updates.   It is very unfortunate that this facility requirement was not established during the planning stages of the basketball season. The impact has affected all affiliated youth basketball communities in some capacity. It is clearly understood that obstacles can come with new ventures and with that, LHYA will assist however it can with plans for next year.   J.R. Reams League President Licking Heights Youth Association

Basketball Update 2

Welcome to the 2009-2010 LHYA Basketball season.  We are finally in the home stretch and putting the final touches on the season schedule.  Larry has been doing a superb job representing LHYA in the community league and handling the day-to-day program logistics. Things have started to move very fast the last two weeks so he has asked me to assist. I have primarily been working  with the Granville coordinator to finish game scheduling for all brackets.  Several people have made request for additional information, so I thought it would be a good idea to send out an update.   First, let me make everyone aware of a new email forward that we have added to the website. Basketball@lhya-sports.org has been defined and will route emails to both Larry and I.  This should make it easier for you to get a hold of us as the season moves on. We will also be able to add in other assistants if we start to get backlogged. The LHYA teams were drafted in mid-November and some were able to squeeze in a practice or two before Thanksgiving. This week should mark the first full week of practices. We tried to get everyone consistent practice days & times for the season. However, there are schools events (ex. Holiday Happenings) that will either cancel or move a practice slot.  The LHYA website has been updated with the current practice schedule and handles  every school event  we know of at this time. Please bookmark this page for future reference and refer to it through-out the season. This will be the primary delivery method for basketball scheduling information. Moving on to the overall league status....All members of the proposed community league have submitted their team/gym openings to for scheduling. The final participant count is:
17 Teams in the Junior Boys Division (3/4 Grade)
      4 Granville
      4 Johnstown
      3 LHYA
      3 Northridge
      4 Watkins
19 Teams in the Senior Boys Division (5/6 Grade)
      1 Centerburg
      6 Granville
      2 Johnstown
      4 LHYA
      3 Northridge
      3 Watkins
10 Teams in the Junior Girls Division (3/4 Grade)
      4 Granville
      3 Johnstown
      2 LHYA
      1 Northridge
19 Teams in the Senior Girls Division (5/6 Grade)
      1 Centerburg
      6 Granville
      2 Johnstown
      4 LHYA
      3 Northridge
      3 Watkins
Community gym availabilities changed from what was originally assumed at registration. These changes and the number of teams per bracket have delayed the game schedule definition. The game schedule is in it's third and hopefully final revision. Directors have until tomorrow evening to submit approval or  corrections.   I have already reviewed and provided signoff for LHYA.  Due to the number of teams in each bracket you will not be facing every team during season play. We tried to keep the number of games balanced within a bracket and ensure that all LHYA teams in that  bracket meet at least once to save an 'away' game.  We will send the final schedule to coaches for distribution as soon as it is approved .  We will also get it entered into the website as soon as possible. Coaches expect a final copy it no later than  Sunday evening. TWO IMPORTANT SCHEDULING FACTS
  • Some areas had to change to Sunday game slots in order to get enough access.
  • Games slots  start next weekend, 12/12 and will take a short break for the holiday before resuming in January
Thanks
Pat Palombaro

Basketball Update 7th and 8th Grade Boys

7Th and 8Th grade boys will be playing in Granville this season. Granville has 5 teams and we have 1. All games will be on Sunday starting 12/20 in the time slot of 1:00 to 3:30 at Granville Middle School. Game start times will be 1:00, 2:15, and 3:30 I will be updating this section with more info as well as sending out the info (via email) to the players that are already on the team.

We had to cut back to one team (deviating away from the original 2 team plan for this division) due to time and scheduling issues. Next season this division will grow with plans to try and add a 7th 8th grade girls division.

Note Registration for this division is now closed. LHYA will be sending back all registrations forms received after the tenth one came in.

As always Basketball information can be found on our home site (link above) as well as more information about indoor and outdoor sports for all seasons.

Practices for the 7th and 8th grade boys basketball will be at 8:00pm at South on Tuesday and Thursday nights.

The season schedule will be posted soon.
